Renowned food writer Bee Wilson says, “If you only read one diet or nutrition book in your life, make it this one.” Adam Rutherford praises it as “a devastating, witty and scholarly destruction of the shit food we eat and why.”

This book explores how most of our calories now come from ultra-processed foods, which are industrially processed, designed, and marketed to be addictive. Chris van Tulleken’s journey through food science reveals the profound effects of these foods on our health, weight, and the planet.

For too long, we’ve been told to make better choices in a food environment designed to undermine our efforts. This book is about our rights: the right to know what we eat and what it does to our bodies, and the right to good, affordable food. Understanding how to identify ultra-processed foods can significantly improve our health and well-being.
