Inspiring stories of Indian men and women fighting against injustices faced by society’s most disenfranchised
About the book
The idea behind the 10s series is to introduce children to diverse aspects of Indian life which conventional education may not have familarized them with, but which are essential to an understanding of contemporary life in India.
A particularly important book in the series is 10 Indian Heroes Who Help People Live with Dignity. This is for two reasons.
Firstly, to build empathy: For many middle-class urban children who live secure lives, there is no awareness of the daily struggles that many people around us undergo. Yet, to be a fully rounded person and an aware citizen of the country, it is important to appreciate that there are many challenges that other people in our country face.
Secondly, to celebrate the importance of different lifepaths: While we celebrate conventional success in corporate spheres, sports, the arts and other more well-known areas, there is amazing work being done by people who have chosen to dedicate their lives to fighting injustice and helping others. It is important for children (and adults) to celebrate such works.
This book tells the stories of ten Indian heroes who have been working in diverse fields to help society’s most vulnerable live a better life from securing mobility rights for people with disability to abolishing the practice of manual scavenging while their challenges are different, what they have in common is the desire to see all human beings live a life of dignity.
